Mississipi 7 Card Stud

Big Deal Promotion

Mississippi Stud is played similarly to Seven-Card Stud, so be sure to read our Seven-Card Stud strategies section for more in-depth tips. The only difference between the two games is that there are fewer betting rounds in Mississippi Stud (the fourth and fifth cards are dealt at the same time) and the final card is dealt face-up. By omitting one betting round, this both speeds up the game and makes it less expensive to play than classic Seven-Card Stud. This also makes this version of Seven-Card Stud excellent to play in a Pot-Limit or No-Limit format, and as such, it’s a popular poker variant to play in No-Limit tournaments.

By having the two cards dealt at the same time, this can improve the playability of some average hands. This will also alter your starting hands strategy from Seven-Card Stud: high pairs are made less valuable, but straights and flushes improve in their likelihood of winning. Hands with a small pair & a kicker fare better against hands with a high pair, but they’ll lose more often to straights and flushes.

If you’re just learning how to play Stud poker or you’ve been playing for a while and want to enter a tournament, no matter your level of play, Poker Stars and Full Tilt Poker have free Seven-Card Stud tables where you can practice without losing a dime from your bankroll. There’s plenty of action on the free and pay tables 24 hours a day and seven days a week. If you’re curious about how tournaments work or you’re a seasoned pro and want to get some tourney practice in before a big event, both sites have multi- and single-table tournaments starting throughout the day with inexpensive buy-ins.
