Lession One - Getting Started

GETTING STARTED

Chris Moneymaker’s surprising win at the 2003 World Series of Poker was a huge boost to online poker. He won the money for the $10,000 WSOP buy-in by winning an online satellite tournament with a $39 buy-in. Moneymaker had just started playing poker a year before and mainly played online as he lived too far away from the closest casino card room. Skeptics who credited Moneymaker’s win to luck and not hours of practicing poker on the internet were silenced when the following year’s WSOP was won by another online gambler. Online poker sites have never been more popular as more and more people discover the fun and convenience of internet poker.

BUYING CHIPS

To play for real money and start winning, you need to register with the casino and deposit funds into your account. The deposit procedures vary from casino to casino, but each casino has deposit instructions.

PLACING A BET

After depositing money into your account, your chips will normally be stacked by denomination ($1, $5, $25, $100 and $500) at the bottom of the screen in most online casinos. Select the amount you would like to bet on any given hand by clicking on the chip of that denomination. The amount wagered per hand may be increased or decreased by placing the mouse on the stack that you wish to add or subtract to or from your bet. Each time you click, you will add a chip from that pile to your bet amount. By right-clicking on stack, you can decrease your planned wager amount. Remember, these procedures vary from casino to casino we recommend that you read the instructions at each casino before playing.

CASHING IN (also called CASHING OUT)

Online casinos usually credit winnings back to a player in much the same way the funds were deposited. Always check the casino’s information section to find out their terms and conditions.

The best way to play is to open an account with an internet cash merchant, such as Firepay, NETeller or Prepaid ATM. Winnings are quickly and easily credited back to your account. In the event that you win more than you deposited, some casinos will credit the maximum amount back to your card and then send you a check for the difference. Many casinos and software developers use a secure third party to manage your funds. To combat fraud, some casinos request documentation from players before cashing out large winnings or issuing a check.
